I'm A Loser!

I lost 4lbs. I LOST 4LBS PEOPLE!

My first week back at Slimming World since November 2011 and I was dreading it...honestly dreading it. I had only been eating and drinking better by 50% and I remember the feeling last year when I didn't lose or I lost only 1 lb when I felt like I should have lost more. I really didn't want to experience that same shameful feeling again. No bread, no daily bag of crisps, no oven chips, no chicken nuggets... Good old jacket potatoes, baked beans, fruit, Ryvita Crispbread with Light Laughing Cow cheese spread and lots of vegetables.

I decided to join a Monday evening Slimming World group rather than last years Thursday evening group with my gorgeous friend Hannah so we wouldn't use the weekends as an excuse to be a pig. It's so much more motivating (and testing when it comes to wine).

Yummy mummies - Hannah, me, Sam
It's a lovely way to feel better about yourself. Being on Slimming World hasn't made me hungry or miss out, it has simply made me food optimise, think about what I'm feeding my body and learn to try new foods. I LOVE IT! (If i don't lose next week then I may not be singing so loud)

I would love to hear from fellow Slimming World members - what do you love to cook?

Where Are Your Followers?

Okay I am running a test this week! Something I have never really liked is having your blog followers showcased at the very top of your blog, because as a PR I understand that it's all about making an impression, the first impression with what your blog is all about...BUT perhaps bloggers see this as FREE advertising for them and their blog so I am going to see if this works!

I'm Under The Spotlight

Louise Robertson asks...
How did you get into crafting? What was your first crafty make? What is your favourite crafting technique?

I joined docrafts, the leading UK supplier in arts and crafts back in 2004 and before then I had never crafted. When I got the job I was petrified because I knew I would have to be creative (I'm only creative in writing and dreaming) but I was super excited to learn. I began with card making and I was never as good as everyone else and with my first ever card incorporating glitter glue and stamping I knew I had no chance of getting very far as a crafter but then I began scrapbooking in early 2006 and I really fell in love with this type of craft! I had so many photographs, a new camera and nothing stopped me!

My favourite technique at the moment is distressing the edges of my papers and cardstock! I distress with a distressing tool, rip the edges slightly, curl up the edges and ink! It's such fun, so easy and adds dimension to your project.

Debbie Powell asks...

What is your favourite part of your job? Did you craft before you worked for docrafts? How's your inspiration?

I know you may say "yeah right!" but I love PEOPLE. When I met recently with Natasha Jones from Leaf Charity and Paula Giles The Party Plan Guru I told them that I adore meeting people as every person you meet will inspire you in some way and as yet I haven't been proven wrong. Working with so many passionate and friendly people who are creative and inspired by colour, tools, creative products and gadgets and others alike is infectious and inspiring - this is the best part of my job!

I didn't craft before I worked for docrafts but I have no idea WHY NOT! I'm not just saying that...it's brilliant and so wonderful giving someone special a handmade card. The time, the effort and the thought that goes behind a handmade card is priceless!

My inspiration? Well I'm currently recovering from a cold and stress so it is flagging but tomorrow hubby is taking the kids out to visit their great Nan so I can make my requested card for the July Creativity magazine and I am planning away in my head. Actually a print design in today's newspaper has actually inspired tomorrows card!

Where do you get your inspiration from? How does blogging enhance your crafting? What three craft items could you not do without?

My inspiration can come from anything - honestly! I recently featured in the Creativity magazine and I mentioned in my piece that inspiration comes from a design on a coffee cup and even the photo frame sat on my desk at work. You just need to look around you and really open your eyes! What colours look beautiful together, does that design on that advert work as a card or a scrapbook template? Try and get inspiration from everything you look at, you read, you touch!

How does blogging enhance my crafting? Oh this is a super easy question and I'm pleased you have asked me. I have met so many wonderful, creative people through blogging who have all encouraged and inspired me to believe in myself and carry on with what I love, whether it's getting published or not. Oooooh even the blogger backgrounds have inspired my recent card making ;-)

The three craft items I could not live without? Well my Xcut trimmer, my Xcut scissors and my glue runner - these get used on EVERY thing I make...the foundations of my creativity.

Getting Mums Attention

Day off for me today. Home with my two beautiful daughters. They did two very long days at nursery, 20 hours in 2 days and this morning they just wanted to stay at home and fight, cry, veg on sofa, where scruffy clothes, not brush their hair, get mums attention in any way... Yes It was one of THOSE days! They started the day off at 5.30 and finally went to bed at 9pm... So have you judged me yet? Am I a bad Mum in your eyes? No! I didn't think you would judge.

In other news, today was exciting with two talented ladies getting PR coverage thanks to me. One is a crafter and the second is a charity. I am so pleased I could create this opportunity for people.

I also have been busy crafting and I have several cards going on www.docrafts.com/creativityclub next week. If you are a club member make sure you take a look at my cards. I'm not as amazing as all of you...but I'm trying!

Leaf Charity Has Blown Me Away

I met such an inspiring woman today. Natasha Jones is a mum who, after 3 weeks of giving birth to her second child found out she had Leukaemia and was immediately put in isolation for 6 months.

It was then, whilst fighting Leukaemia and only allowed to see her closest family she decided to start up a charity to provide support to those going through the same. Leaf Charity was born in February 2006.

Natasha approached Birds Of A Feather actress and Calendar Girls star Lesley Joseph at a luncheon last year and after hearing Natasha's incredible story, Lesley became the patron for Leaf Charity.

I was thrilled to be asked to meet up with Natasha this morning to brainstorm PR opportunities for Leaf Charity and I am very pleased to announce my involvement with Natasha and her team. As a volunteer myself, I can't explain how excited I am to be assisting Natasha in her very exciting and passionate journey to help others.

This incredible woman has an amazing story to tell from her childhood to now, (I have told her to write a book!) but one thing you can be sure of is you will never, ever hear her say the words "I hate my life!" - those days are gone.

Please join me in supporting Natasha and Leaf Charity and keep your eyes pealed for more exciting events coming soon.

A Slow Morning = normal?

I'm sat waiting for my three year old to get dressed and my husband. It's 10.55am. It's almost 11am and I'm still at home waiting for my family to get dressed!! I'm not used to this way of life and I can feel the anxiety building. We are always out early going on some adventure, showing the girls how lucky they are to live in Dorset!

When I admitted to myself that having PND is something that needs treatment back in January I promised to slow life down and let the girls just do what they want to do, although that's being home after a mad week, to me it feels wrong. I'm bored, are they bored? I need to walk, I need to run, I need to escape from this house.

I now associate my house with depression because this is where it all happened. The sleepless nights, the tears, the insanity, feeling trapped, constant cleaning. I am much happier now. I want to run, to laugh, to skip, to go down slides, jump in puddles and be a big kid and a fun mum. To avoid housework and all the pink toys!

It's now 11:04 and they are still getting ready...

What Kind Of Person Are You?

Life is moving far too quickly!

I'm one of those people that barely stops to take in smells, sounds... I rush everything, look for the quick and easiest answer, prefer to text then chat on the phone so I can still do the other 5 tasks at the same time including listening to my daughters stories. I skim emails until I find that moment at 10pm to read a little more carefully before calming a crying toddler down and climbing into bed past midnight. We start the day at 6am with nursery run completed and at work by 8.30am, we rush our goodbyes and when I see my daughters again we seem to say hello just as fast, not really talking about the day but talking about our plans for the weekend and how sleep is good...

When I'm not at work? We cram in play dates with friends and sulk because we are tired.

So this is me. This is my life. I feel like I'm on a very fast train...

What kind of person are you?

A Very Small Handmade Card

After an 11 hour day which involved dropping the kids off at nursery one direction, heading to work the other direction and 10 hours later heading back to collect the kids and head home. So after an 11 hour day what happens? Kids refuse to go to bed and hubby puts the football on. PERFECT!

After finally getting the girls to sleep I decided to hide in my craft room and make a few cards. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on my day and have a break from the computer. I have so much going on at work that my mind is constantly thinking so it was really nice to sit in silence (I could have easily nodded off), make a mess (oh boy was it a mess!) and make some basic cards to share with you all.

This card is so small and so cute! The card is 3" x 3" from Papermania and it was actually a little challenge for myself. I have never crafted on something so small so this was a task. I'm determined to do more little cards and try new techniques though. I can imagine decoupage and crackle glaze would work well on a card this size.

I admit it. I am addicted to my new butterfly punch (it's so pretty!) and the Lucy Cromwell die cuts (due out in May - a perk of working for docrafts is that you can get your grubby mitts on the stash as soon as it comes in)

I can see how working on 3" x 3" can get addictive as it is a really exciting size to work with.

Bigger isn't always better folks ;-)

17.4.12

Florals & Butterflies

I can't show you the card because it is a Creativity Club exclusive BUT I can show you a little sneak peek. I don't, for a second think I'm good enough to have my work published everywhere and to everyone but I was having a good day crafting the other week and my cards were loved by the docrafts team so you will find one card in the Creativity Club Projects section and in the May Creativity Magazine.

I am proud to be a card maker! *smiles*

I may offer my services as a docrafts demonstrator - who would come and watch me at my events on a Saturday? ;-)

One Big Rainbow

This weekend I have come to the conclusion that I think about my ambitions far too much, I think about EVERYTHING far too much, so much that it plays on my mind when I'm at work, when I'm at home being mummy and when i'm sat listening to my husband talk about his day at work. I have, this weekend accepted that I will never get on top of the washing, will never get to the weekend and my fridge and freezer is full, I will never be one to regularly dust and I will never, ever manage to stand for an hour and do ironing. My life is far too chaotic for that. It's my life though and I do love it but I have too many things going on that I can't stop this fast train and i'm missing all the little things in my life! (I really don't mean to make it all sound dramatic)

This "thinking too much" had done nothing but weighed me down for weeks. It has played on my mind (sleep has been very little) and it has made me realise that I need to stop trying to look at life being black and white and realise that there are a wealth of colours in my life...it's one big rainbow!

I will be giving a few things up to make my life more simple and although I'm the kind of person that finds it hard to give anything up (hence why I have struggled to diet!), it is about time I did to make being Mummy better for me and my children and to make me happier.

I'm sure there will be another blog post to follow very soon.

In other news...

My youngest (21 month old Myla) did her very first wee on the potty today and she is having her first night in her "big girls bed" tonight (which I am slightly anxious about!). No more cots for the Collins household! Myla went straight to sleep so please keep your fingers crossed. See this is when I wish I could record all the little special things like this in a scrapbook. I am always so inspired by Ali Edwards. If you have never seen her work before please pop over to www.aliedwards.com

We Called Him Bunny!

I am officially THE best mum in the world! Why? Because we now have one very gorgeous rabbit called "Bunny". We picked him up this morning from a friends son because they were moving house and there was no room for "Bunny".

I have never had a rabbit before but my husband did when he was a little boy and I have always been jealous of his story.. I never thought I would be so excited about getting one when I have spent the past year saying "No way are we getting another pet!" and "Well who will end up cleaning it out and looking after it? Yes mum will!"

Miss Moo is my youngest at 21 months old and it was so adorable seeing her so excited. She climbed into the run with "Bunny" and read him books with THE biggest smile on her little face. She would go into this excitement rage where she would flap her arms and stamp her feet!

I feel awful that he is now living on our patio, although it is sheltered from the wind and rain, it seems so sad for him to be living outside but there is NO WAY my hubby would let us keep him indoors. I also can't let on how excited I really am to be an owner of one very adorable rabbit, otherwise my little family will think that I'm also close to saying YES to getting a dog.

So...I am officially THE best mum in the world! (well today anyway)

A Look At my Ultimate Blog Challenge So Far...

Since starting the Ultimate Blog Challenge in April 2012 it appears that my top 3 popular posts so far are as follows...

My apology to my local library (although a few days after writing this they shut for an entire weekend and my daughters went from running to the doors super excited shouting "Princess and Dinosaurs!" to being really upset and mummy bribing them with the park to stop the tears!!)

Is it best to write guest posts for others? which was published last night in response to a question posted on my Facebook wall by Paula Giles. I was so pleased to get comments on this post. It just shows that adding value to a blog brings in the traffic. You can read it here - http://www.theprmummy.com/2012/04/is-it-best-to-write-guest-blogs-for.html

And What do you offer? proved to be a successful post. Inspired by a dream I had, this post was focused on realising that there is something special about every one of us, and that we all offer something valuable to the world. You can read this post here -

If you are taking part in this challenge then take a look at your blog stats and share your top three popular blog posts so far in this challenge.

Is It Best To Write Guest Blogs For Others?

Dear Paula (aka The Party Plan Guru),

Thank you for taking the time to post on my Facebook page over at The PR Mummy

Your question; Is it best to write guest blogs for others to get your business out there or is there another way to get out to a larger audience, Is a question that I get asked A LOT.

Writing guests posts for others blogs is a great way to reach a wider audience and drive traffic to your blog. I am passionate about this idea (as well as getting others to write guest posts on my blog), and although this is time consuming, it is a great way to do PR.

Writing for other blogs or websites offers them free content to fill space and entertain their readers but it also benefits you in reaching new readers and driving awareness to your business. You never know who may be reading, and I bet you that there will be at least one new customer out there who will then talk about you to their friends tomorrow.

Make guest blogging your key strategy in your marketing campaign, especially if you don't really have a marketing budget to start with and keep an eye on your stats. Evaluate the traffic source.

When writing a guest post for someone's blog or website make sure you are adding value! Don't just make this a sales pitch. Make the readers trust you. Remember that it's not just your name at stake here.

With bloggers using the social media to pull in readers, don't forget that your post will be plugged via Facebook, Twitter, Google + and possibly even LinkedIn. All of these media outlets are doing the selling for you so make sure you are not only adding value to the blog you feature on but also adding value and brand awareness for yourself! You don't want to look pointless, silly, unsure and boring do you?

Another great point to make you aware of is that if a blogger features you on their blog, they are telling their readers to trust you like they do! This is another selling point right here so make sure you research just who you will be blogging for as it works both ways.

Remember to get a link in the guest post. This is great for search engines! Google SEO if you want to know more about getting the most from the internet or I can talk more about this.

Finally I can't stress this enough, when you write that guest post remember not to just be that "sales guy" but remember to add value. Offering information that could help people will be much more of an attractive read...so get writing and get blogging!

Paula with your line of work I would also suggest researching national magazines. Try getting in touch with the editor of Craft Business and Craft Focus and offer them your services. With party planning on the rise with retailers across the UK, you could be the person to add value to their business and offer good tips in their industry (bible) magazine.

You could also offer some very useful tips to women's lifestyle magazines. I'm pretty sure you could offer some fabulous tips to mums that are trying to juggle motherhood with a way of making some money and keeping their independence (and sanity).

I wish you lots of luck. Keep me updated!

Kindest Regards

What Do You Offer?

My dream last night taught me to never pretend to be someone you're not!

Focus on being positive and concentrate on what is special about YOU. Make sure you write down what you offer the world so you understand clearly how good you really are.

Everyone offers something special so don't say that you don't!

Me? I offer enthusiasm, ambition, interest in each individual and "listening ears" as my 3 year old daughter says, understanding, devotion and finally compassion.

As a blogger or a business owner make sure you blow your own trumpet. There are many that don't and therefore are not heard but you are your best PR, your best agent so make sure you sell yourself on first impressions...if not then demand testimonials from fellow bloggers or customers and let them do it for you!

Feel free to leave your testimonials here for me to show my blog readers ;-)

Mumprenuer Focus With Michelle Poole Of Virtual Hand

Let’s begin: I am self-employed and just celebrating my first year in business, as a Virtual Assistant (http://www.virtualhand.co.uk) and loving every minute of working with a variety of businesses with different aspects of their back-office.

My favourite part of my work is discussing projects with my clients and identifying time-saving and efficient tools to enable them to achieve their goals. The cloud is really helping small businesses to be the best they can and to be able to outsource work in order to increase their revenue.

For the past 6 months I have also started to train VA’s to create and run a successful business (http://www.vact-yorks.co.uk) and by using weekly one-hour training sessions (over 11 weeks) it enables them to produce a dedicated business plan for their business.

My husband works away from home Monday-Friday so the responsibility of nanny, chauffeur, cook, nurse, treasurer and disciplinarian falls to me for 5 out of 7 days (although support is always there).

I love to keep fit and found that the only thing that works for me is to run around the local park for an hour at least twice a week; in a group and with a “commando” style theme. Mud, running and pain comes to mind but it’s only for an hour!

For the past 20 years I have also been a member of a team who work on weekends so twice a month I am away for the weekend; training, educating and working with others.

My girls attend trampolining, ballet and drama as well as having friends over, sleep overs and television requirements that all need to be “nurtured” and balanced with cleaning rooms, washing up and homework time!

Juggling involves balance – a bit of this, a bit of that and all with a positive attitude and a smile. I use calendars to great effect as well as planning my time and family commitments and then sometimes you get to spend the morning in bed; with breakfast and your laptop or current book to take some time out – like today!

I Love Strange Fruit

While working in a policy team at the Health and Safety Executive I stumbled upon the Press Office. I did a two week placement to find out what the work was all about, found I loved it and didn’t leave for five years. During those five years i learnt on the job and studied for a media and communications degree at Birkbeck University.

Although my career was moving in the right direction, i was winning awards and getting promotions I felt an urge to have an independent venture but didn’t have the time or money or headspace to do it.

Getting married in New York in 2009 and receiving lots of lovely cards from friends and family reflective of a young black couple was the emotional motivation I needed to change my mindset. In October 2010 I launched Strange Fruit my boutique greeting card company which designs and sells cards reflective of a diverse and modern Britain. The cards are sold online and in independent gift and card shops across the country, they are just going into the Mary Portas at House of Fraser shops and will be available in the USA and Canada this summer.

I now combines PR, freelance writing and Strange Fruit in what I call a ‘portfolio career’ where each role is equally as important as the other; each role pays and most importantly provides job satisfaction. Of course the business still has a long way to go but I am loving every minute of it.

What Do You Slow Cook?

I am IN LOVE with my Slow Cooker. I have owned one for a year now and I always stick to the same dishes that I know my family will eat! Cottage Pie, Chilli Con Carne, Casserole... and that's pretty much it!

I have heard that you can cook joints of meat and you can bake cakes in the slow cooker but I haven't found the time to read up and trial this. This is, however on my agenda!

I read a post by the fabulous The Chicken Keepers Kitchen bloggers in March (please take a look!) and I have been thinking about trying this myself. I have arranged time off work, whilst the kids are in nursery so I can experiment without getting distracted. My daughters are young and their attention span is apx 10 minutes tops before needing Mummy to play another game with them.

How scrummy does this look...

My Apology To My Local Library

Dear Lovely Library,

Please accept my apologies for only using you as a stop off to read magical books to my 3 year old and 20 month old. You see I don't want them growing up never reading "proper" "real" books and I never want them to loose sight of magical mummy time so we will continue to visit, to ruin the order of your children's books and to chill out in your beautiful castle that you have created within your refreshed, modernised building for young children.

I, however was bought an IPad at Christmas and I tried so hard to write off the Kindle, I was disgusted that technology could even think about replacing "real books" - believe me, I moaned a lot...until I was handed an IPad, found Kindle and found Amazon! I just "buy now" and voila it is on Emma's kindle. I know! I know! I'm disgusted with myself as I always thought that although I'm in PR, obsessed with social media that the library, the feel, the smell would remain true in my heart... I will continue to bring my daughters up with regular visits to the same library that I visited as a small child.

Promise!

I just hope that you will never be beaten by technology. You are my Aladdin's cave, my one weakness, my magical place...

Kindest regards

Emma Collins

Card Making + Cool

Yes I am a PR and a mummy, cleaner, cook, taxi, TV host... I also love to make my own cards rather than buy from the shops (unless I am really snowed under or forgetful and then I will dash to the local Tesco in a mad panic). Here is a simple 'cool' card that I have recently made using my favourites Boofle and Raffia...

A Dream Called Boxwood

{feel inspired by this press release folks}...

It’s been 10 years since I asked myself a simple question. Why not open a shop?

A shop that provides the things that enhance the little spaces in your home. That make it especially yours; something that gives your home a heart. I called my dream Boxwood.

The answer 10 years ago, was to throw all my savings and a big bank loan in to the business. Start the researching, speaking to people, drumming up support and hitting the trade fairs around Europe to source these special things. This was before Google! We bought over the existing picture framing service in the shop, to add another string to our bow, and then added the Boxwood Baby range as well. Then came the newish addition, the online store; to keep our out of town customers happy.

Byres Road has changed a lot since 2002, with less independent retailers and more coffee shops, mobile phone stores, charity shops, banks changing names and Woolworths gone forever. It hasn’t all been plain sailing, and has taken a lot of hard work, determination & graft to keep Boxwood on Byres Road.

We’ve tried to change and diversify with the times, without losing sight of the inspiration and original dream that started it all. The one constant throughout has been the undying support of our loyal customers, without whom, we just would not have survived.

I’ve been blessed with amazing staff through the years, and would like to thank them all so much for their hard work and support they’ve given Boxwood. Especially Rona, who has been with me since I first came up with the idea, don't think either of us thought we'd be celebrating a decade! She picks me up when I need it, pats me on the head when I deserve it, & gives me a talking to when I know its coming! My right-hand girl & good pal!

We live in uncertain times, but I would like to think we can offer a little spark to brighten your day, whatever the weather! So here’s to another 10 years. Happy 10th Birthday Boxwood, my dream!

Are You Blogging Too?

With today being the first day of the Ultimate Blog Challenge I thought that I had better create a WOW post...but then I remembered that I did promise myself a while ago that I would write truthfully and not put too much pressure on myself (I don't talk to myself very often). Blogging every day for 30 days will be a fun challenge and I will simply loose myself in the world of blogging amongst friends.

I plan on blogging about myself, my dreams, tips for blogging successfully and using other Social Media outlets, networking, making new friends and contacts and talking about other bloggers in craft and parenting. Being a mummy will also play a big part in this 30 day journey.

Are you blogging too? Share a link with me here each day so I can pop along and read!

A couple of tips for blogging...

1. If you feel inspired and have a head full of ideas then write a bunch of blog posts and have them filed on your computer ready to fit in with the right prompt. The prompts are a way of helping you to feel inspired and get you blogging about, perhaps topics that you haven't thought about.

2. I found that in January, I was attracting many more readers to my blog when I blogged on an evening! Releasing my blog posts about 10pm seemed to hit those lovely blog readers who were doing a spot of bed time reading. I will be trying different times once again to see if my research still proves correct. Try doing the same!

Now make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed so you can keep up to date with my 30 day blogging...please?

Good Luck x
